NFC through PayPal and Mobile Payments
PayPal
According to Gene Marks a contributor to Forbes.com, he recently met with Anuj Nayar who works as a top man at Ebay. Nayar explained to him that with the help of Ebay's pay pal utilities Starbucks is now able to use near field communication to order their coffee order from within their cars. You no longer even need to be at the store to place your order. Just choose what you want and pay for it via PayPal and by the time you walk in, your coffee is ready to be picked up! (Marks, 2013)
Starbucks Mobile Payment
In 2011 Starbucks announced that it was going to release its ability to pay with a 2-D bar code through their mobile app, and this time it is to reach every single one of their branches. According to Brady Brewer, VP of Starbucks card and brand loyatly, " Today, one in five Starbcuks transactions is made using a Starbucks Card, and mobile payment will extend the way our customers experience and use their Starbucks card." (2011) I thought it was interesting to look at this article because as I explained in the above paragraph, Starbucks has taken this payment method a step further from 2011. He even mentions how someday "Mobile payments could be powered by NFC." And that someday has come! It is incredible how advanced we are becoming.

Location Based Marketing
If you look all the way to the bottom of the text it shows what Starbucks the customer needs to go to to redeem their coupon

In 2012 Starbucks was crowned Mobile Marketer of the Year and they got this award for innovation and sophistication in their mobile platforms. They actually have received this award more than once.. actually 3 times in the past four years. The reason that they have been so innovative is largely due to their location based marketing tools. They use SMS quite a bit when it comes to their campaigns and also their apps which include loyalty programs and coupons. Customers can "opt-in" to the SMS messages, which means that they send a text message to a number and Starbucks automatically signs them up for whatever campaign they are running at the time.
Although this is a little repetitive, they also use location based marketing to generate QR codes for payment. Customers can decide what they want and pull it up on their phone. Once they scan their phone, the money is taken out of their account. Starbucks also uses their apps and location based marketing to tell if and when you have been to one of their stores and how many times. You can earn rewards that may seem like they are coming from no where but in fact Starbucks is tracking what you are doing through the use of their app. Check out more on: http://www.mobilemarketer.com/cms/resources/mobilegends-awards/14499.html |
